To clarify the interpretation, the count for repeating a course twice begins with this semester. This semester is the first time for the sake of counting repeats, regardless of how many times a student has taken the course before.
Course Repeats:
The most important revision that you must be aware of is the allowable
number of course repeats. It is very important for you to read all of the
following information so that you understand it. The policy statement reads
as follows:
The grade earned for a repeated course is substituted for the previous grade in calculating subsequent grade point averages even if the later grade is lower, but both attempts are recorded on the transcripts. No course can be repeated more than twice. (ie, registered initially, repeated once, repeated twice = 3 registrations)
1.1 The counting of repeats and/or failures in a course will be implemented
for all students and all courses as of Fall 2002 (full-time programs, part-time
programs, Continuing Education Certificates and Continuing Education courses).
Please note that if you were registered in any Spring/Summer 2002 courses,
they will not be included in the repeat count.
1.2 The count of course repeats will include any corresponding/equivalent
course taken through Continuing Education, where relevant (ie MTH240 and
CMTH240; CPS706 = CKCS706).
1.3 If you repeat a course to improve your final grade, even if you
earn three (3) D grades, you will not be eligible to repeat the course
a third time.
1.4 If you fail a required course for the third time, you will be assigned
an academic standing of Withdrawn, and will be ineligible to continue in
your program.
1.5 If you have been withdrawn for failing a course for the third time
and request to transfer to another program at Ryerson, you must ensure
that the specific course is not required in the new program as you will
not be permitted to register in the course for a fourth time.
1.6 If you fail an elective course for the third time, you will be
required to clear the requirements of that elective group by registering
in a different course within the same group.
1.7 If you fail a course for the third time in a time period when there
is no calculation/assignment of an academic standing (ie Fall for a year
program; Spring/Summer term for a full-time program), you will be notified
in writing of the consequences of the third failure and recommended to
officially withdraw before the assignment of the Withdrawn standing at
the end of the next term.
1.8 If you register in a course for the fourth time, you will be dropped
from the course and your instructor will be notified that you are ineligible
to continue in the course.
1.9 If after you have been assigned a withdrawn standing for the third
failure, and are then granted a course substitution for that course, your
academic standing will be revised to Suspended and you will be required
to do at least one term of suspension (as per normal suspension policy).
