CPS305: Data Structures

Dr. Woit

. Check page daily for additions.

Aug_16: Short Class Tue Sept 5
Class starts at 3:10pm, and is a short introduction only (less than 50 minutes).
Lectures on course material will begin the following week.

Aug_16: Labs First Week
The first labs start on Wed Sept 13. Do not attend labs before that.

Aug_16: Additional Textbook Info
/usr/courses/cps305/standish.source.code/ contains files:
  • Errata.txt (corrections of some errors in the printed text)
  • Ch*programs.txt (text of source code used in our text)

Aug_16: Login Problems
If you are having trouble logging into the moons (forget password, locked out, etc.) you must see a sysadmin to get it sorted out. Here are their names and offices:
  • William Zereneh ENG248
  • Ivan Rubiales ENG-246
  • Yousif Nakkash ENG-246
  • Misagh Aghajani ENG-248

Sep_27: Old Midterms
For the 2016 Midterm, disregard questions 11-14 inclusive.
For the 2015 Midterm, disregard questions 8-13 inclusive.

Sep_29: Notes and Lab coverage for Test 1
The test covers everything we have done in class so far (intro, recursion, complexity).
The material covers all the labs done so far. However, you should also look ahead to lab03 because it deals with space complexity, which is on the test.

Sep_29: Lab04 after Study Week
When you return after study week, proceed to lab04, and complete lab04 and lab05 before test 2. After that, simply check the lab topic (http://www.scs.ryerson.ca/~dwoit/courses/cps305/coursedirPublic305/Labs/) and complete the labs any time after the appropriate material is covered in class.

Oct_01: Test Questions
There are about 14 questions on the test, but some have multiple parts.
People has asked what to focus on, and I have noted that the marks are split fairly evenly among the 3 lectures so far (intro, recursion, complexity), with the latter 2 having a slight bit more marks than the intro material.
I looked at the notes mainly when creating questions, but I also did look at the labs, the text, and old midterms.

Oct_15: Test Return and Solutions
Test 1 will be returned in your labs this week. Please report any errors to your TA immediately in the lab. You can refer to these solutions to double-check your answers.

Oct_18: Test Marks
Your TA will fix any errors in grading. See him in your lab, or any other lab. Lab times are: here.
After consulting the TA, if you are still not satisfied, and you would like the TA and instructor to review a specific question together, then you must submit a cps305-re-evaluation-form within the 2-day deadline.

Oct_19: Test Marks Ctd.
Average was 64%.
Here is the grade histogram.

Nov_01: Notes and Lab coverage for Test 2
  • Material: Test 2 focuses on material AFTER Test1; however, Test 1 material is also involved. For example, recursion and complexity are not explicitly tested, but we use recursion to implement some Test 2 algorithms, and we use complexity to estimate efficiency of some Test 2 algorithms.
  • Textbook: Specific Textbook chapters covered are shown on the Topics Page.
  • Class Notes The Class Notes covered on Test 2 are:
    • all of "lists"
    • pages T1-T14 of "Trees" (inclusive, including all sub-pages such as T2.1)
  • Labs: Lab04 and Lab05 (some AVL questions were added to Lab05.) Note that some material from previous labs is also relevant (e.g., previous labs on lists, complexity, etc.)
  • Old Midterms These were given above in the Sept_27 announcement. The questions that were disregarded for Test 1 are now relevant for Test 2.

Nov_01: Test 2 Questions
There are about 14 questions on the test, but some have multiple parts.
Marks are approximately split as 38% lists, 33% trees (before AVL), and 29% AVL.
I looked at the notes mainly when creating questions, but I also did look at the labs, the text, and old midterms.
These formulas are given on the first page of the test:

Nov_07: Lab Coverage After Test 2
  • There are no labs during the week of Test 2 (Nov 6-10).
  • The remaining labs may be completed any time after the topic is covered. Specifically:
    • labs 6-8 any time after Nov 17 lecture, and
    • lab 9 after Nov 21 lecture.

Nov_23: Lab Coverage After Test 2 Ctd
A lab10 has been added on sorting.

Nov_23: Test2 pickup and questions
The average on Test2 was 75%.
Here is the grade histogram.
Your TA will return Test2 in the lab periods. Please see him if you have any questions.
His email is aufkes@cs.ryerson.ca

Nov_28: Test2 Solutions
You can refer to these solutions to double-check your answers.

Nov_28: Final Exam Info
General information about the final is here.
QA about the final is here. More questions will be added as they arrive.
Sample questions from previous years' Final Exams are here.
